How I Started Farming- I had the traditional childhood experience of forced labor in the family gardens. This led me away from the earth into academia; upon my exit I found myself living in New York City. While living there I worked at an herb store and a food coop. These ex- periences helped me see the link between health and diet. I decided to come back to earth and returned to Central Missouri in 1991. I have been gardening on my father's farm ever since. In 2003, my wife and I bought a farm eight miles north of Columbia. I planted an orchard and started growing flowers and vegetables. The farm came with an immense number of perennials. Why I Farm Organically- I learned that you really are what you eat. If we poison the land and water, then eventually we poison ourselves. My years in the garden have taught me that if I feed the soil and let the balance of nature reemerge then many of the pest and disease problems will be alleviated. I do not claim to have it all figured out, but the gardens keep getting better. I have gardened without the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides since 1991. In fact, I do not even use a lot of products accepted by organic standards. I use cover crops and mulch, I pull a lot of weeds and I smash a lot of bugs. One of the reasons I refuse to spray my crops is that in 2005 I became a father. This gets to the heart of the matter; we are left with the legacy of our forebearers, it is not a pretty picture. If we are to be responsible stewards of the land, then we must analyze our actions from the eyes of our grandchildren.

Nancy and Danny Johnson with their son Shannon and wife Donna, own and operate Johnson’s Orchards & Peaks of Otter Winery. J Elmo Johnson, great grandson of John T. Johnson, established Johnson’s Orchards in 1918 in the area of property that had been in the family since the 1750s. The orchard has over 100 different apple varieties mostly heritage varieties. The farm is home to a herd of grass fed cattle, goats and sheep. The Johnsons are involved tin the Bedford County Farm Tour each year and they were the 2008 Hosts. The farm and winery have lot of animals that you can visit while on the farm either picking fruit or tasting wine. The farm was the 2006 Bedford Agribusiness of the year and received the 2007 outstanding conservation farm of the year award. Both the farm and winery are certified "Green”. Each year on the second Saturday in July, the Farm Hosts the Horse & Hound Wine Festival with lots of Family events that both the old and young enjoy. In 1995, the Johnsons considered making wine from the fruits they were growing. More and more Virginia Wineries were being established and were attracting an increasing number of visitors. The commercial apple business was in decline and the Johnsons felt that the addition of a winery would also be a way of selling more of their fruits directly to consumers. Shannon, who is now the wine maker, says the 80% of the fruits used in the wine are grown on the farm. Grape vines, primarily Norton and Concord are now bearing with new ones coming on. Berry plants have been planted and will soon be bearing. Peaks of Otter wines are reminiscent of “Grandmas or Great-Grandma’s” wines, those old fashioned wines made from a variety of fruits. A venture into vegetables using chili peppers, to make “Kiss The Devil” wine and blend with apple wine to make “Chili Dawg” wine, (this Dawg will bite)has been so successful that “Ch Many of the wines are made from Danny’s grandmother’s recipes and the fruits or berries are fermented in apple juice and require less sugar to turn the fruit into wine. At this time more that 25 wines are produced with our newest wines fermented in apple juice being “Pumpkin Pie” and Pomegranate. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia at the foot of the Peaks of Otter and 7 miles from the National D-day Memorial. We opened as Virginia’s 50th farm winery in 1995. Although we grow many fruits for our wine, apples are our main crop. You may purchase fresh apples, peaches and nectarines that we make into wines, cider and butters. We are open daily April thru December noon to 5 with our wines, jellies and jams, January thru March, on weekends and 9 to 5 August thru October with our fresh fruits. The rest of the time we are open by chance or appointment Bring a picnic and visit our farm animals after tasting our wines in one of the most scenic valleys in the state. .

The 2009 season is well underway and is going well. Have added 3 corn varieties, all hybrid unfortunately as I was the only one who liked the taste. Have over a dozen tomato varieties and they are doing well. Some peppers are ready now as well as squash, some cabbage, 2 varieties of potatos, plenty of dill, onions 3 varieties of cucumber. I should have some melons to sell shortly this being mid August and will have some pumpkins in about a month. Unfortunately last winters ice storm destroyed my cherry trees so I won't have any for a few years. The apple trees and pear trees look good 1-2 more years and they should be ready.

We offer apple and raspberry Pick-Your-Own-Fruit seven days a week! We've also got a great selection of fresh fruit, homemade baked goods, freshly pressed apple cider, jams, and Jane's Ice Cream at the Stone Ridge Farm Stand. Stone Ridge Orchard is Third-Party Certified Eco-Apple, Fair Trade, and Ecologically Managed by Red Tomato. Now under new management by Elizabeth Ryan of Breezy Hill Orchard. The oldest trees at Stone Ridge Orchard are a stand of old apple trees, clustered around a majestic oak at the top of a hill. The classic varieties-- McIntosh, Cortland, Golden Delicious, and Stayman-- are a testament to a two hundred year history of apple growing on this beautiful farm in upstate New York. Tucked away in the Rondout river valley between the Shawangunk and Catskill Mtns., the continuous production of top quality apples is what the folks at Stone Ridge call "fair proof" that the mountain climate is perfect for raising produce. Many things have changed over two centuries in the orchards here, and the combination of deep history and modern ideas are part of the unique charm. In the mid-70s, many of the old trees were replaced by modern varieties planted on smaller, semi-dwarf rootstock. In 2000, another 1000 trees were added to the orchard, on fully-dwarf rootstock that allows even denser planting per acre. Varieties including HoneyCrisp, Gala, Ginger Gold, Macoun and Fuji were added to old favorites. Today, the orchard contains many other fruit trees-- sweet cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums and Asian pears-as well as berries, pumpkins and melons. But apples remain the centerpiece, watched over by the weathered stand of ancestors on the hilltop. In 2008, the owners of Stone Ridge approached their neighbor, Elizabeth Ryan of Breezy Hill Orchard about taking over the management of their orchard. The partnership turned out to be a good fit and the orchard is known today as Breezy Hill at Stone Ridge. Stone Ridge has a strong commitment to ecologically friendly methods, and a longstanding appreciation for the complementary approaches of organic and IPM methods. This visionary perspective makes them a perfect partner for Red Tomato's Eco Apple program.
