About Farmfoody.org

Farmfoody.org is a social network connecting people to farm and garden.

Our ideas and mission

We believe social networking can bring independent farms and people together to restore balance in our agricultural system. In the past, farmers and their customers were centered around small towns where they interacted directly with each other in a transparent and sustainable way. We see social networking as a new way of interacting with independent farmers and supporting sustainable agriculture. We believe social networking can help the small farm survive and thrive in a big agriculture world.

Read our brochure Farm Foody: A Social Network Connecting Independent Farms to People to understand why we believe social networking is beneficial to the family farm and society.

What is a social network?

A social network is a group of people connected to each other through their activities and interests within an online community. If you are unfamiliar with social networking, Wikipedia has a good article on social networking.

How do I get involved?

To get the most from FarmFoody, you must sign up. Once you are signed up you can create a personalized map, receive bulletins from local farms, make friends, share recipes. It's up to you how you use our tools.

If you would like to show your appreciation for our site, you may purchase a book through our bookstore. The store is primarily to spread the ideas like the ones in Omnivore's Dilemma or In Defense of Food or Salatin's many books on farming, but we welcome any support you can give us.

You may also be interested in the Edible Estates project, which helps people create gardens and microfarms in their suburban yards.

Who can participate?

Everyone who eats, grows things to eat, or transforms food into cuisine. Really. Anyone can join farmfoody.org, but you must choose an account type, either Farm or Foody. A Farm account is any local producer, a farm, vineyard, PYO, Farmer's Market, CSA, even a victory garden qualifies. A Foody is a customer, chef, everyone with a relationship to a farm and who wants to make friends with a farm or another foody. We don't like to call them 'producers' and 'consumers' but if you want to be techincal, that is who they are, and like Michael Pollan says, we want to bring them together for a conversation.
